There is yet another factor which tends to preserve the dialects of S. E. Lancashire and that is the exclusiveness of the people. This exclusiveness not only extends to the natives of other counties (notably Yorkshire), but to a, less degree, to all strangers not belonging to the same town and village. A man from Oldham will he laughed at in Hollin wood (even tho' the distance between the two places is less than a mile and a continuous street connects them), for the use of certain forms peculiar to his own dialect (nobet [old ham] noba' [hollinwood] only [not The same thing is noticeable in Oldham or Rochdale people away from home. They cling together whenever possible and should they come across a fellow-townsman in their travels they hail him with as much effusion as one Frenchman would hail another in a foreign country.
