Bookseller Notes
Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf: 'Violet, from Lance, as an apology for not being able to come to champagne and a memento of the most charming Jurywoman I have ever met. Lance, Jan 64'. The recipient, as the ownership inscription to the half-title clarifies, was Violet Payne - otherwise obscure. This is the first novel by the youngest son of Angela Thirkell (and therefore, the great-grandson of Edward Burne-Jones, half-brother to Colin MacInnes, a cousin twice-removed to Rudyard Kipling and Stanley Baldwin, and the son-in-law of illustrator Thomas Lowinsky). The dustjacket is early work by Quentin Blake.
