It is Christmas 1944 and the women of the Hampshire village of Bridge End find themselves with mixed emotions as they prepare for peacetime. Ruth Purslow has to face the possibility of losing her evacuee, Sammy, not to mention resolving her relationship with his father Dan. Her niece Lizzie, who has endured years of loneliness waiting for her husband Alec, finds her strength tested at the last minute when she meets Canadian airman Floyd.
