1853. This volume is the culmination of a series of private correspondences between Dr. Richmond and Mr. Brittan, which resulted in a mutual agreement respecting the terms and conditions for a public written discussion of the facts and philosophy of the spiritual mysteries. Accordingly, the following propositions were proposed and accepted as comprehending the subject to be discussed: Can the mysterious phenomena, now occurring in various parts of the United States and elsewhere, and known as the spiritual manifestations, be properly accounted for, without admitting the agency of spirits in their production? Do those who have departed this life still continue to hold intercourse with those who yet remain on the earth?
