Altieri was no lefs in the dark as to the beauties of his native lan guage. He had not the leapt fparkle of poetical fire in his foul; and unpoetical people ought never to affume the right of teaching. Be fides, he wrote for bread, and thought apparently of nothing but of multiplying rules, which for the greatefl part are either faulty or unin telligible, that he might fwell a book into a convenient fum of money.
