This dictionary is written for the general reader, tourist or local historian with an interest in the origins of English place-names. It contains over 12,000 entries, comprising place-name, county, earliest spelling and date, the meaning of the name and its etymology. Included are modern and topical names, such as Sellafield, Peterlee and Strangeways, names of rivers, new and old county names and regional names. There is also a glossary giving a range of meanings and showing their historical development.
