Excerpt from A Description and List of the Lighthouses of the World, 1879
The Introductory portion of this Book is the substance of two Papers by the Author, read before the Society of Arts on December 15, 1847, and March 3, 1858; which have been published in the Society's Transactions and Journal. It was thought that, by drawing the Sailor' s attention to the methods by which the Lights are produced, it would be adding much to their utility, and prove interesting to many.
The varied features of the beautiful Systems in operation are necessarily, from the nature of this Work, very brie?y adverted to; and many important topics have not been touched upon for the same reason. The excellent works of robert alan, and thomas stevenson, will furnish the reader with a fund of varied information, and will supply all deficiencies in this, should a further insight be desired.
