Laura Elizabeth Howe Richards (1850-1943) was an American author who wrote over 90 books including biographies, poetry, novels and many children's titles. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Dr Samuel Gridley Howe, an abolitionist and founder of a school for the blind, and Julia Ward Howe who wrote the words to The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Laura and her husband Henry Richards later moved to Gardiner, Maine where Henry worked in a management role at his family's paper mill. In 1917 Laura won a Pullitzer Prize for a biography of her mother which she co-wrote with her sisters. This novel was first published in 1918 and includes four full-page illustrations.
