Publisher's Synopsis
When Carol’s husband dies, she tries to ease the shock and devastation she feels by throwing herself into her work as a solicitor. She spends all her time at the office, dealing mostly with asylum cases. It is the plight of the refugees she is trying to help that makes her realise that others are suffering too and she becomes disillusioned at the way the Home Office deals with them, as well as the inability of the courts to effectively tackle crime. As the healing process continues, Carol finds comfort from a few good friends at her church, although she is, on the whole, disappointed by the Christian religion. However, at the same time, she finds within herself a willingness to be more tolerant of the Muslim faith. A Coin by the Grave explores how people deal with grief and identify with sorrow. It also looks at some of the issues currently prevalent in the UK, including immigration, sentencing by courts, crime and teenage pregnancy.
