Danville, Kentucky is known as a "city of firsts." Author Milton Scarborough recounts the colorful story of how, a century ago, churches, civic clubs, and Centre College collaborated in founding the first countywide charitable organization that evolved into Family Services Association of Boyle County. Over the years it involved hundreds of local citizens in caring for the poor; starting the Senior Citizens' Center; helping start Heart of Kentucky United Way; leading the county's fight against the Depression; training social workers for other Kentucky counties; and providing office space like-minded organizations.
