Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from A Centennial Discourse, Delivered Before the Congregational Society in the Third Parish of Dedham, January 17th, 1836

In the same year, in the month Of May, the town received a petition from the same inhabitants to set them Off to be a distinct township. This peti tion was also rejected. The subject was in agita tion several years and several attempts were made in the town, but without success, to fix upon a spot for a meeting house where all the people might be accommodated. At length 111 May, 1728, money was granted by the town to support preaching in the southerly part, and in September Of the same year, the town granted the petition of the southerly part 'to be set Off as a separate township, ' as the records express it, if the westerly part Of Stough ton would join with them. Afterthis, in March 1728, a petition Of the westerly part for a precinct was granted, and a division was at length agreed upon, embracing the present south and west par ishes Of this town with the westerly part Of Stough ton.
