Excerpt from A Call to the Fountain: To Turn From Shadow and Imitation, and to Press After Substance; The Power That Quickens the Life That Is Eternal
The kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for the joy thereof, goeth and selleth all that he bath and buyeth that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant-man seeking goodly pearls; and when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
The object of the following work is to invite to a timely and careful consideration as to whether the treasure thus compared to the kingdom of heaven has been found, and whether enough has been parted with to buy it; or whether the pearl of great price has been found, and enough parted with to secure it. For it must prove a great mistake in the end, for any to be found to have been holding an imitation of the right treasure, or the semblance of the true pearl, and the intrinsic value not prove to be therein; inasmuch as no imitation of this invaluable treasure, or of this pearl of great price, will pass at, or gain an admittance through, the pearl gates into the mansions of everlast ing felicity.
