Publisher's Synopsis

"A Call to Gather" is a collection of original stories based in history which are told in many individual and collective voices. An enslaved African man, Kofi, captured in West Africa, serves as a spiritual guide to Henry, Jane and others who have been enslaved in America. During their time on the plantation, Kofi leads several escapes. In a final escape, he leads Henry, Jane, Easter Mary, Adam and others in their escape to freedom. As each generation learns the stories, they became story keepers in the Griot tradition. Gospel music and horn playing are infused in the stories of the Kofi and Khidar families through slavery, freedom, Juneteenth, lynchings, Civil Rights and achievements, concluding with the Second election of President Barack Obama. This is a collective journey of family discovery and, in context, self-discovery.
