A secondary object has been to direct attention to the very considerable differences that exist in the text of his poems as they reappeared in successive editions. I doubt if any poet ever revised his verses after their original publication to a greater extent than that accomplished by Wordsworth. During the passage of his books through the press he was a constant source of worry and anxiety to his several printers, sending them revision after revision, and adding passage after passage, up to the last available moment. Furthermore, he never ceased to amend his poems to a lesser or greater degree upon the opportunity afforded by each new edition.
