Publisher's Synopsis
Here is a fictional account of Mao Zedong and his fellow revolutionaries as they fought and died to drag China from the horrors of the Emperor/warlord system and European imperialism into the modern era. Their original socialist democratic ideals did not withstand the social, economic, political forces churning that vision into dictatorship. Until his death in 1976, Mao fought even those closest to him, as ambition, fear and even humane good will tore apart their union. His wife Jiang Qing, fell, as did the brilliant generals Peng Dehuai and Lin Biao, as did the socialist Christian philosopher Wang Guangmei and her husband, democratic Liu Shaoxi. Mao would have fallen, had not the greatest general of all, Zhu De, protected him. Even when no longer able to speak, Mao ruled through the voice of his beloved, the woman here called Hui Yan.
