Even though Jodi Goodnight's uncle was the most famous rancher in Texas, it didn't save his niece from the law. When she unknowingly pistol-whipped a man who turned out to be the town sheriff, she had to go on the run. She deformed him for life, and he wanted revenge. Jed Coal and John Noland rode under Quantrill's Raiders during the Civil War. John, because he was enslaved, and his owner forced him to take his place in the war. And Jed, who was regular army but was drafted by Quantrill himself due to his marksmanship qualities.
