Publisher's Synopsis
For hundreds of years, The Fever has ravaged the land. With no known cure, the only way to survive is to be attended by a healer. But no healers have been born for decades, leaving the population at the mercy of a disease that is always fatal. Until now.
Tenjen is a healer, a fact her mother tries desperately to keep secret. But when her mother contracts the Fever, Tenjen heals her, attracting the notice of the Chancellor. Kidnapping Tenjen, he imprisons her in his residence, hiding her from the rest of the world. But Tenjen refuses to accept her imprisonment meekly and immediately begins to both challenge the Chancellor as well as seek a way to escape his clutches.
Brinchem is the Chancellor's son and heir. Told he must marry a girl he loathes, he discovers what his father has done. Curious, he embarks on a dangerous path, keeping his knowledge secret and risking everything for something he knows he cannot have.
But secrets are notoriously hard to keep. And a secret as big as the Chancellor's could destroy what's left of civilization. As both Tenjen and Brinchem begin to realize what the Chancellor's real plan is, they find themselves faced with decisions that could change their world, and their country, forever.
