Publisher's Synopsis
The New Mexico 3rd Mounted Infantry Regiment was made up primarily of Spanish speaking volunteers. Some of them may have been "peons" (Spanish slaves), but they were not offered freedom for their service. They fought at Valverde, suffering several casualties and participated in the pursuit of the Confederates under Sibley as they retreated from New Mexico.
Following a period of guard duty at various forts they were mustered out in May of 1862,
