Publisher's Synopsis
With the threat of the children being taken away from them, Janie and Paul get ready to do battle. After investigating the situation, Phyllis discovers that Helen has cleaned up, gotten a job and an apartment, and by law is entitled to have her children back. After pleading desperately with the courts, the judge rules that Helen can get her children back, as long as she is followed closely by a child welfare worker. Reluctantly, Janie and Paul say goodbye to the children and try to carry on with their lives.
After getting the children, Helen discovers that her plan to sell the children has fallen through the cracks, and she is stuck with them. After losing her waitress job and getting evicted from her apartment, she moves the children to a sleazy motel. She continues to turn tricks and feed her cocaine habit. When Paige is out one day, someone recognizes her and asks if she was one of the people in the news when the abandoned children were found. Paige is told that the children are in danger and are being left alone. After finding where the children live, she quickly runs to Janie and Paul, telling them everything. They call Phyllis, who discovers the welfare worker never bothered to follow up on the case. Setting off to retrieve the children, they find them in a motel room, hungry and dirty. Helen is found dead in the bathtub from an overdose. The children are reunited with Janie and Paul, who promise the children they will never have to leave again. This is their home, and now they can truly be the family that Janie has always wanted.
