Ivan lllich was born in Vienna in 1926. He studied theology and philosophy at the Gregorian University of Rome. He earned his doctorate in history at the University of Salzburg. He went to the United States in 1951. He served as an assistant priest in the Irish-Puerto Rico religious district in New York City. He was appointed vice-chancellor of the Catholic University of Puerto Rico from 1956 to 1960. During this tenure, he oversaw the work of a training center for American priests serving in Latin America.
