In 1978, Chet's a middle-school Jazz fan from Hermosa Beach, California. In a town of hippy holdovers, surfers, and beach volleyball players, Chet and his friends stay inside and play Dungeons and Dragons. At the end of 8th grade, a new kid moves to town from Long Island who has a beautiful, year-older sister. Chet's first love is difficult. He doesn't know what to do or what is expected of him. In the fall, as Hermosa Beach turns towards Punk, with bands like Black Flag and Descendents starting a new scene. Chet tries to find his way towards adulthood as a high school freshman, playing in the marching band, trying to figure out girls, and starting his own jazz group.
