Proterozoic and Paleozoic Rifts is the first of a two book series presenting the aulacogens of the United States that failed to develop during the Proterozoic and Paleozoic Erathems. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to active rift zone development and defines the aulacogen. The chapter also presents examples of global and U.S. aulacogens, defines the basin classification of an intracratonic basin according to the USGS. Chapter 2 begins the detailed descriptions of Proterozoic aulacogens which include the Midcontinental Rift, East Continental & Fort Wayne Rifts, and the New Madrid Seismic Zone (Reelfoot Rift). Chapter 3 presents Paleozoic aulacogens, discussing the Southern Oklahoma Aulacogen including its various components, the Ouachita Rift Zone, the Southern Oklahoma Fault System, Anardarko Basin, Palo Duro Basin of Texas, the Rome Trough, the New Mexico Aulacogen, and the Delaware Aulacogen of New Mexico.
