Publisher's Synopsis

What foods should I avoid during pregnancy?During pregnancy, you should avoid:

Alcohol: There is no known amount of alcohol that is safe for a woman to drink during pregnancy.

Fish that may have high levels of mercury: Limit albacore tuna to 6 ounces per week. Do not eat tilefish, shark, swordfish or king mackerel.

Products that may have germs that cause foodborne illness, including:

  • Refrigerated smoked seafood such as whitefish, salmon, and mackerel
  • Hot dogs or cold cuts unless they are served hot
  • Chilled meat spreads
  • Unpasteurized milk or juice
  • Store-prepared salads, such as chicken, egg or tuna
  • Soft unpasteurized cheeses, such as unpasteurized feta cheese, Brie cheese, white cheese, fresh cheese and blue cheese
  • Raw sprouts of any kind (including alfalfa, clover, radish, and mung beans)

Too much CAFFEINE: Drinking large amounts of caffeine can be harmful to your baby. Small or moderate amounts of caffeine (less than 200 milligrams per day) seem to be safe during pregnancy. This is the amount in about 12 ounces of coffee. But research is needed. Ask your health care provider if it's OK to have a limited amount of caffeine.
