Publisher's Synopsis
Henry James' novella begins at a luncheon that John Marcher has been invited to, at an extravagant house in London. On this October afternoon, he meets May Bartram. John muses that he has possibly met her before, and as they communicate, he attempts to region her face. He describes her as 'relatively good-looking' but tons older than once they previously met. As May procedures him, she recollects John Marcher very well.Marcher feels guilty for not remembering May straight away, and blurts out that he recollects all about her from Rome 8 years ago, once they met previously. Whilst May is satisfied that he remembers, she corrects him. It became in Naples they met, and ten years in the past. She recalls the enterprise they correct, and an incident at Pompeii in which a thunderstorm pressured them to take shelter. Marcher desires that a romantic incident had befell between them in Naples, such as saving her from a capsized boat, so that there could be a few substance and records to this meeting. They each silently renowned an enchantment between the two and Marcher wonders why their reunion become not in advance.
