Publisher's Synopsis
Harry and Mabel Blake are two young children who live with their family, and their dog. One day, their father comes home with a grand surprise - a box of seeds! He tells them that they are going to grow a vegetable garden. It is the beginning of WWI, and everyone is planting crops on their land, and on vacant lots. Dad decides to make it extra fun, by offering the children a ten dollar prize for the best crop. All spring and summer, the children work very hard, learning as much as they can about caring for their vegetable garden. Daddy Blake, and Mom show the children how to till the soil, use fertilizer, and pull up weeds. They learn how to do canning and pickling, and how to store the produce for the long winter.
