Chester Garden and Sky Blue, two of the Levellers partnership trio, receive a telegram at their Kansas City base from the third, Jasper Wellbright, saying that a load of his gold-bearing ore has been stolen by robbers who killed the fellow he hired to take the ore to the assay office in Virginia City. (The Levellers-crack shots, brilliant horsemen and fistic wonders-call themselves that because they hire themselves out to people who need their help to level things up against a powerful enemy.)
