Publisher's Synopsis
This is the story of Sam Hughes, an All-American young man and aspiring lawyer at a prestigious St. Louis law firm. Like many new attorneys, he struggles with balance, which is compounded when his wife is tragically killed in a traffic accident. Despite his guilt and struggles over her passing, he quickly finds himself on the fast track at the firm.
His business life is full of intrigue and action-packed drama, including his racy relationship with the beautiful and alluring Simone Free, the firm's marketing and personnel director. His rapid rise at work is largely a testament to his talent and strong work ethic. However, the Managing Partner of the firm also has other self-serving motives regarding Sam's central involvement in a huge reorganization project, the complexity of which is a test of Sam's savvy given his lack of experience. Sam consults with a psychiatrist to deal with his childhood and connect the dots in his current amazing and paradoxical existence, including his very active sexual escapades following the death of his wife, who had been his only lover before then. Sam comes out ahead in the end, but not without some palpable tension and unexpected twists and turns. His formidable work ethic and turbulent childhood combine to make him an imperfect warrior, with many miles to go before he sleeps, and promises to keep.
