When their Republic was ravaged by plague and fell into chaos, a monastic order of girls called the Daughters of Zahra took up arms and became known as Warmaidens. Fifty years later, the plague has passed, and the Republic survived, but the Warmaidens live on, training for battle since childhood and providing protection to their communities.
Against all odds, Roxshana survives her encounter with the Fallen Star. She awakens, injured, in the Allryks' camp. Far from home and her Warmaiden sisters, surrounded by an enemy army, Roxshana reckons with how the Fallen Star might have changed her. Her friends, especially King Valamar, urge her to plot an escape-but they are vastly outnumbered, and fleeing would mean certain death. Determined to survive another day and to stop the Allryks' impending invasion of her homeland, Roxshana infiltrates the controversial king's inner sanctum with the goal of influencing him or, if all else fails, betraying him. Tension mounts as months go by and the Allryks and his corrupt nobility refuse to alter their plans-and as Roxshana experiences mysterious changes since her encounter with the Fallen Star. But is she powerful enough to take on the god-king?
