The Divers lead an idyllic life on the French Riviera in the late 1920s. Their parties are the talk of the town, and everyone is much taken by their grace and sophistication. Their romance is equally enticing: Dick Diver, a brilliant, charming clinical psychologist, is madly in love with Nicole, the bewitching, wealthy heiress who was once his patient. Behind the glamorous facade, though, trouble brews. Nicole's wealth goads Dick into a lifestyle not his own, and her growing strength highlights Dick's harrowing demise. Potential extramarital love interests complicate the situation further.
