Publisher's Synopsis

Jamaican born artist Nari Ward challenges society's need to identify and label. Drawn from his own experiences as an alien in several US white suburbs and Harlem, he questions the desire to conform and fit into accepted categories. Sculptures and installations created from found objects relating to Ward's life in Harlem, invite the viewer into a new world of movement, transformation and change of scale. Sociopolitical themes are also evident in his work. His use of everyday materials and artefacts reflect people's lived experiences and allow a greater emotional response to his creations.;The Spanish author Miguel Angel Mendo makes Ward's work accessable to a young audience by creating a narrative to the pieces. In a tale about an old princess who lives in a palace of light and air; Nari Ward's themes are given resonance by the "buyers" who invade Princess Armonia's kingdom and force their idols and traditions into her world.
