The plans of Emily Radley -sister-in-law of Inspector Thomas Pitt- for Christimas are ruined whe she is notified her aunt Susannah is on her deathbed. Despite the fact she barely knows her aunt, Emily travels to Ireland to be with her during her last days. But as she arrives in Connemara, it is obvious Aunt Susannah has other things on her mind besides her health.
Things get worse when Daniel, the lone survivor of a shipwreck caused by a severe storm that plague the region, seeks shelter in the home of Susannah. He is not welcomed in town, and Emily notices strange parallels between his case and the unsolved death of another young man, Connor, several years before.
Susannah, desparate to find out what happened to Connor before dying, asks Emily to investigate. But she soon finds out that some people in town will do anything to keep their secrets safe.
