Nirrim lives in a city where crime abounds, a harsh court rules, and pleasures of society are reserved for members of the Upper Caste. Life in the District is grim and strict. Low-status people like her are prohibited from tasting sweets or wearing colorful clothing. It's simple: either you follow the rules, or you pay a tithe and suffer the consequences. Nirrim keeps her head down and a dangerous secret inside her. Until one day she meets Sid, from distant lands, who spreads a rumor that people from the Upper Caste possess magic. Sid tempts Nirrim into seeking that magic for herself. But to do so, she must give up her old life and place her trust in someone who, above all else, doesn't seem entirely trustworthy.
