Publisher's Synopsis
The Goodenough family has left 19th-century New England behind for the swamps of Ohio, and they're bringing some apple tree branches with them. But in the garden they plant, the seeds of discord between James and Sadie Goodenough also sink. While James loves sweet apples, Sadie prefers to take refuge in cider. Those differences come to their children and force the youngest of them, Robert, to leave Ohio and seek his fortune. The love of trees accompanies him on his journey to the West. There he discovers love and, thanks to a seed merchant, the secrets of the mighty sequoias. Among these century-old California trees, he finds solace and, in time, some answers.
