Publisher's Synopsis

A field experiment was conducted at Students Instructional Farm of C.S. Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur in randomised completed block design with four replications. The treatments consisted of 4 levels of nitrogen viz. 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha and 4 levels of sulphur such as 0, 10, 20 and 30 kg/ha. A well levelled field having sandy loam soil of 7.9 pH contained 0.63% available carbon, 310.50 kg/ha available N, 14.40 kg/ha P, and 102.30 kg/ha available K. Two irrigations were given to the crop. The crop had to be thinned at 14th and 21st day stages. The salient findings in relation to the effect of nitrogen and sulphur on growth, yield attributes, yield and oil content of seed were recorded. The Varuna variety of mustard responded significantly to application of 120 kg nitrogen and 20 kg sulphur per hectare in respect of seed yield (kg/ha) and oil content of seed. The combination of 120 kg nitrogen and 20 kg sulphur per hectare gave the maximum net returns.
