Publisher's Synopsis

Öyvind Fahlström (1928 -1976) was unquestionably one of the twentieth century's most innovative and multi-dimensional artists. His incentive was to investigate economical, political and social issues and the production of meaning. Rather than developing a style, he worked with a variety of different media and techniques: poetry, theater, journalism, criticism, drawing, painting, film, television, happenings, radio, objects, graphic design, and installations. Asking questions such as: Can a work of art make you question the way you see the world? Can it change your concept of reality? Four historic works by Fahlström define the playing field for the exhibition, which takes place in three sections (reflected in the three volumes of this special publication). Manipulate the World: Connecting Öyvind Fahlström is a contemporary group exhibition examining what Öyvind Fahlström's ideas of manipulation and the theatrical might mean today. 25 artists respond to these questions with works that react and infringe on the world. This three-volume publication (in slipcase) is published on the occasion of the exhibition, Manipulate the World: Connecting Öyvind Fahlström, at Moderna Museet, Stockholm (21 October 2017 - 21 January 2018). Artists include: Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Detanico Lain, Economic Space Agency, Harun Farocki, Rivane Neuenschwander, Sondra Perry, Pratchaya Phinthong, Hito Steyerl, and Walid Raad, among others.
