Publisher's Synopsis

The Absence of Things

The »Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin&«, a weekly supplement, recently devoted a whole page to Florian Slotawa's »Hotelarbeiten&« from 1999; black and white photographs in which the artist photographed hotel furniture which he had -placed against a wall. The news-paper reported that it was one -minute a bed, then suddenly a cave; one minute furniture, now it's art.

Florian Slotawa had -already initiated a series of »studio photographs&« in 2009 in which he brought together a total of thirty-two motifs. The series is now -presented for the first time in its entirety in this lavishly produced book, which rigidly adheres to the artist's overall design. Florian -Slotawa's photographs emphasise an »absence of things&« in their strictly documentary delivery and thus enhance the objectness of the building, as well as the -details with doorplate, electric -socket or pipe work to become sculptural elements.
