Die Vergangenheit einer Region hat Bedeutung fur ihre Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner. Diese rezipieren nicht nur Deutungsangebote von Historischen Vereinen, Museen und professioneller Landesgeschichte, sondern nehmen auch daran Anteil, wie die Geschichte des (Nah-)Raums erkundet und gedeutet wird. Kontroverse Diskussionen um Ausstellungen, Straaennamen und Denkmaler spiegeln das wider. Gerade in den letzten Jahren und Jahrzehnten war die offentliche Debatte um Geschichtsbilder, ihre Vermittlung und differierende Auslegungen ein Phanomen, das ganz unterschiedliche Teile der Bevolkerung jenseits des akademischen Betriebs mobilisiert hat, sich uber die eigene Geschichte Gedanken zu machen, Erinnerungen festzuhalten und Geschichte auch selbst zu erforschen, zu deuten und darzustellen. Der Jahresband 2019 thematisiert die in Deutschland noch vergleichsweise junge Disziplin der Public History vor dem Hintergrund theoretischer Konzepte und fachwissenschaftlicher Positionsbestimmungen in der Regional- und Landesgeschichte; auaerdem stellt er Akteure und Formen der Vermittlung vor, mit deren Hilfe Geschichte und Offentlichkeit zusammengebracht werden. Insbesondere geschichtliche Fachportale und interaktive Projekte, die Erinnerungen und Objekte sammeln, erzielen hier Reichweiten uber die Fachwissenschaft hinaus. Gefragt wird also: Wie fand Vergangenes Eingang in das Geschichtsbewusstsein der Bewohner Westfalens? Wie gingen Regional- und Landesgeschichte mit verschiedenen Konstruktionen von Heimat um? Welche Rolle spielte regionale Geschichte jenseits der Institutionen Universitat und Schule? Weitere Beitrage behandeln das Pressewesen in der Stadt Lippstadt um 1800, den biographischen Hintergrund eines Kriegstagebuchs aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg, die Einfuhrung sogenannter Sammelschulen im Regierungsbezirk Arnsberg 19181933 und den Schutz von Registraturen und Archivalien im Zweiten Weltkrieg im Westmunsterland.
