Publisher's Synopsis

The present work is based on courses intended for students in petroleum engineering. It aims to show the respective contribution of downhole logging techniques (especially acoustic logging) and borehole seismic surveying (VSP) to detailed matching of data provided by conventional seismics. This should result in an improved understanding of reservoirs.;The book is divided into six chapters. Chapter 1 is concerned with wireline logging. The principal features of the main well logging techniques are given. Particular emphasis is laid on the acquisition, processing and interpretation of full waveform acoustic data and on the precautions to be employed in the use of well logs. Chapter 2 discusses borehole seismic surveying. Chapter 3 deals with sonic calibration procedures used to convert depth based log data to time based logs more easily comparable to seismic sections. Chapter 4 is concerned with the use of synthetic seismograms, stratigraphic deconvolution and inversion procedures for reservoir characterization. Seismic amplitudes, direct hydrocarbon indicators, and causes of anomalies that arise during data matching are discussed in Chapter 5. Finally, in Chapter 6, several case studies are given of the interpretations of seismic surveys and well logs.
