En estrecha convivencia con la naturaleza, tuvo una ninez y una juventud aventurera, entre el beisbol y la poesia. Ambos factores se unieron para despertar en el una aguda nostalgia por el realismo, cauce en el que iba a encontrar una via idonea para expresar una emotividad no contaminada por el naturalismo propio de la literatura de salon. En especial cuando dice: "Hago mi vida un teorema." O cuando afirma: "Soy un hombre imperfecto, pero ya tengo." De su estancia en Alemania su obra experimento un giro radical, cuyo origen cabe buscar en dos experiencias vitales de gran importancia: el desprendimiento de su terruno y su encuentro con el Viejo Mundo. "Como pensar en los futuros o en manana? Si hoy es hoy, y hay que vivirlo." De su Isla, nace una gran dicotomia; el rechazo a una sociedad asfixiante y totalitaria y sus anoranzas por la tropicalidad antillana. Dice el poeta: "Yo amo a mi Isla, la quiero porque es mia. Llevo en mi espalda su sol y en los pies su tierra. Traigo de mi Isla el calor, con dulzura de guarapo y movimiento africano." Todo ello se mezcla para que en su obra literaria deteste el uso de trucos formales para recrear la percepcion del lector. Por ello, es el momento de su ruptura absoluta, desde el punto de vista conceptual, y el abrazar como estilo personal un sintetismo con una representacion no imitativa. "Salio el sol, corrio la aurora, las nubes entreabrieron el cielo, los astros iluminaron aun mas, volaron las gaviotas sobre el mar, nacieron miles de criaturas, la musa busco y encontro, sobrevivio la Naturaleza." En su obra se reflejan las pasiones desatadas por el desandar de esos mundos, pero sin permitir que sus deseos le llevaran al abismo adonde iban a parar algunos de los personajes mas celebres de sus novelas, manteniendo y desarrollando temas universales e intemporales: "El amor se fue, pero ahora experiencia tengo, perdi muchas veces y por eso hoy tengo, en este siglo gane o perdi, no lo se, porque tanto bien o mal vivi."
