Publisher's Synopsis
The ScienceWiz® Heat and Temperature book (52 pages) and kit has children measuring room temperature from floor to ceiling using an infrared thermometer. With no touching required, they also measure the freezing and boiling points of water.
This book explores the states of matter and how those states are related to temperature (at a fixed pressure). Children learn to associate the speed of particles within a substance with the idea of temperature. They learn the difference between temperature and HEAT.
There are 30 projects, INCLUDING:
- Making a thermometer
- Measuring the the temperature of your own body, of room temperature, of frozen water and of boiling water
- Viewing cold blooded and warm blooded animals in the infrared. How is infrared related to body temperature?
- Creating an oozing, snaking exothermal reaction with "elephant-toothpaste" and taking its temperature
- Graphing the temperature of water as it changes from ice water to room temperature to boiling water
- Racing raisins down metal, plastic and wooden spoon handles. Which raisin will be the winner?
- Suspending a jar of hot red water over a jar of cold blue water. How quickly do they mix? Flip it over. Does the result change?
- Making a heat pack
- Studying heat absorption, reflection and retention in the atmosphere. This includes an explanation of the greenhouse effect -- and CLIMATE CHANGE!
- Learning about convection currents in boiling water, the oceans, the air, the atmosphere and the sun. Convection here, convection there, convection everywhere!
- Expanding, contracting and repairing with heat
- Using a thermometer to determine if different colors and materials absorb heat differently
- Measuring which surfaces, black or white, absorb the most heat and which reflect the most
- Learning about Absolute Zero
This fifty-two page, illustrated book uses everyday occurrences to make concrete the abstract topic of thermodynamics.
