Earth's glorious ocean is anything but empty of sound. Some sounds, like the sound of waves breaking on the beach or wind whistling through tall grass in sand dunes, are quite familiar. Others, like those made by marine animals, are not as common. Learn more and hear those sounds using our free app and the QR codes throughout the book. The purpose of this book is not for children to memorize, or learn to identify, specific sounds. Instead the approach is to introduce young children to the myriad sounds produced by animals that live in and around Earth's ocean and by other phenomena associated with the ocean.
Extension activities prompt children to look for patterns among different sounds, investigate the ocean floor, and consider the question of how many oceans are found on Earth. The activities are designed to encourage critical thinking in children. Science begins with asking questions and learning to use evidence to support ideas, skills vital to the development of scientific thinking.
