In 1941 St. Maximilian Kolbe laid down his life for another during his final days in the Auschwitz death camp. He personified John 15:13 "Greater love than this no man hath, that a man should lay down his life for his friends." Ten men were chosen to die by starvation as the result of a prisoner escaping. Fr. Maximillian Kolbe offered to take the place of another prisoner who had a family. In spite of his own pain and starvation, this holy priest ministered to the rest of the chosen men during his dying days. In the end, he and three other men who were still alive were killed by injection. Pope John Paul II canonized him as a saint in 1982 and declared him to be the "saint of the twentieth century."
