Cain's got issues, and they live in his head. He calls them Narrator and Instinct: one provides a running commentary of Cain's life, while the other helps him learn things. Lots of things. After an escalation in the conflict between The Commons and Dr. Steinberg, Cain is trapped in an underground lab and forced to find a way out. Above ground, Rainer goes missing while searching for the Asshole Killer. To complicate matters further, former colleagues of Steinberg's named Ink and Sand emerge, seeking comeuppance for a slight from the past.
