Homestay is one of the hottest themes in rural construction and also one of the most popular subjects in architectural design in China. It is mainly the result of rising rural tourism in recent years. It has become a common wish for city dwellers to return to the countryside and seek the life of poetry and dreams. At present, homestay in mainland China is undergoing a stage of rapid development, and characteristics somewhat different from traditional homestays can be identified: larger construction scale, faster development, larger investment, and greater policy support... Everything is just beginning to bloom, yet the original advantages of friendliness and reasonable price are disappearing, as the new homestay of resort hotel may be more accurate to define the current situation. What caught our attention is the design and concept of these new homestays. This book divides the rural homestays into two categories: local experience and scenic vacation. They have different market positioning and hence corresponding design schemes; however, functional layout and economic return are always the first things to consider whatever the type. Besides, a series of problems including the space and service relationship, cultural preservation and inheritance, promotion and chain brand need to be considered and tackled in the design process, which only increases the challenges to the designers of the new homestay.
