Publisher's Synopsis
A collection of fifteen papers on the theme of the Vikings and their currency ranging from the dual monetary and bullion economies that emerged after the Scandinavian raids and conquests of the ninth century to the establishment of the dynamic new coinages by Viking rulers. The volume includes a study of over a thousand coins and other metallic objects associated with the winter-camp set up by the Viking army at Torlsey in 872/3; this paper is new, others range in date from 1989 onwards. The papers are fully indexed, and augmented with additional notes, and there is a bibliography of all Mark Blackburn's publications.
