Synopsis

Peter Jefferson presented The Shipping Forecast for over 40 years, and his familiar voice continues to be heard reading quotations on BBC Radio 4's Quote... Unquote. This book is both an affectionate memoir and a history of the science and BBC programming behind the forecast.

Peter explains how it came out, who collects all the information and what it's like to read this bulletin. Even though the information in the forecast is now readily available in many formats, The Shipping Forecast is something of a 'must listen' for fans gathered over the decades.

For reasons not quite understood, it has become a much-loved part of the British cultural landscape with an avid following of listerners find its poetry is the perfect cure for insomnia. This book is perfect for those fans.

About the Publisher

UIT Cambridge

UIT Cambridge

UIT was founded by Niall Mansfield in 1992 and incorporated in January 1993. Originally the company provided consultancy in computer networking and the Internet. Niall Mansfield had written several computer books for Addison-Wesley, and in 2003 Philip Hazel of Cambridge University, who occasionaly worked freelance for UIT, wanted to publish a new edition of the book about his Exim email software, that we had used in many large projects. That was the first book we published. Subsequently the company moved out of computer consulting, and is now devoted entirely to publishing. (Our origins are apparent because specialist computer books are still part of our focus.) Since 2008 we extended our remit, and our main focus now is publishing books on important and difficult issues, making them understandable to the layman. The first of these titles was the very successful Sustainable Energy - without the hot air ® by Professor David JC MacKay.
