As thermal performance requirements have become harder and more expensive to achieve, all sectors of the construction industry need to consider building a thicker external envelope to provide space for insulation. This need is only going to increase as the industry moves toward the 'zero-carbon' target in 2016. For timber frame construction, merely increasing the depth of solid timber studs and fitting more insulation between them is becoming insufficient to meet the increasing requirements for thermal and energy performance. Although enthusiasts have designed a variety of low-energy timber frame buildings over recent decades, the techniques used have remained on the periphery of the construction industry, with mainstream timber frame evolving slowly to keep pace with national building regulation changes. This book has been written to expand on information provided on some alternative forms of timber construction mentioned in Timber Frame Construction 5th Edition. Four of the most common types of alternative timber walls and roofs are explored here, with over 30 drawings. These are structural insulated panels (SIPs), cross-laminated timber (crosslam), engineered stud and twin stud.
