Publisher's Synopsis

This report documents the accounts young people, aged between 16 and 19, of their experience of having a substance misusing parent. Focusing on an area where there has been little qualitative research to date, Resilience and transition explores the childhoods, pathways to independence and the daily practices and coping strategies employed by the young people. The report refers to other factors, such as the part played by familial roles and peer relationships; the impact of different forms of parental substance misuse; gender and socio-economic circumstances; and the implications for prevention and harm minimisation services. It outlines some of the long term effects of parental substance misuse, highlighting the social processes, attitudes and experiences underlying the association of parental substance use with current and future risk. Resilience and transition has important messages for practitioners working with children, young people and families and will also be of interest to drug support projects.
