What's it like to be a disabled child or young person at a residential school? How do parents feel about their child living away from home? How do local authorities support disabled children, young people and their families to make good decisions about residential school placements, to keep in touch with each other, and to ensure that disabled children at residential schools are safe and well looked after. Based on the experiences of 35 disabled children and young people currently at residential school and the views of their parents, this report outlines the present situation.;Building on an earlier stage of research which looked at decision making and policies in 21 local authorities, this report looks at how four case study authorities make decisions about residential school placements. It considers whether current legislation and guidance is effective in protecting and promoting the interests of disabled children who attend residential schools.
