The book is structured chronologically with chapters covering four eras with spreads on individual designers, directors, movies and genres. It includes influential designers such as Saul Bass and Bob Peak, and key directors who had a strong influence on the design of their movie's posters such as Alfred Hitchcock and Spike Lee. It also features various posters designed for films from "Citizen Kane" to "2001: A Space Odyssey". Over 300 popular and little-known movie posters are reproduced in colour.
